Ace stopped dead when he saw the man. "Hello," Ace said nervously.

The man nodded at him and Rei. He pointed at the clearing and Ace felt that it would be very bad if the two of them didn't go there. He looked at Rei to see what she thought.

She frowned, but nodded and began to make her way to the clearing. She would not have done well to fight the man off even if she had wanted to. She was not looking forward to what awaited them.

Ace saw the figures he'd seen off in the distance were getting closer. They were definitely not trees. Just men who happened to be in a clearing. This was getting really weird. Ace couldn't help but feel that they were going to die.

Rei stood straight once they entered the clearing. There was no reason for them to know that they were injured. "May we help you?" she asked, surprising herself with how strong her voice sounded.

Ace realized the people had stopped walking after a bit. His mind was only half there, the other half regretting the fact he had never made an atomic bomb before. It was one of his life goals.

"Yeah, what do you guys want?" Ace asked.

The men looked at each other, then examined Rei and Ace. Their gazes seemed to take in most of what had happened the night before and Rei saw what she thought might be understanding on their faces.

"Hello," one of the men broke the silence. Ace was in shock that one of them had actually spoken up. He was beginning to think that they were all mutes or something.

"We're terribly sorry for frightening you," the man smiled warmly.

Rei was surprised at what she heard. Something was incredibly wrong, she knew that, but she had absolutely no idea what it was. "It's okay," she heard herself say.

Ace didn't really trust these men. Men who walk out of a forest and surround you in a circle in a clearing weren't really the type you befriended. On the other hand, if it got them out of there, he would do whatever it took.

"It's okay, don't worry about it?" Ace said warily.

The men brought out a small basket and handed it to Rei. Inside, she saw, was a surprising amount of food. The men did not move out of the circle and one motioned for them to sit down.

Ace sat down and peered inside the basket of food. He was nervous but he was also pretty hungry since all they had eaten were berries, and that was hours ago. He reached inside and took a small bite of some bread. "Thank you very much?" Ace said nervously. "But really, we need to be going."

Rei did not even touch the food. She was more than a little wary of these men. As far as she saw, it was only a matter of time before Ace dropped down dead from eating the bread.

Ace got up and smiled genuinely. "We really appreciate the food. But honestly, Rei and I have to get going. We're kind of scared of you, for starters, and we're also wandering aimlessly right now," Ace said.

"Brutally honest as always," Rei thought as she stood again beside Ace. The men looked genuinely hurt and seemed to have a short conversation that only they could hear. She looked at Ace to see if he was anywhere near as confused as she was.

Ace saw the look on their faces and felt bad. "No, don't get me wrong, guys. We love that you gave us some food. We were really hungry. It's just that last night we were attacked by a monster, and then tossed around like bouncy balls by this really creepy man that appeared out of nowhere. We spent the night running away from them. We're just scared."

The men looked at Ace curiously. 'Bouncy balls you say?' He grinned and crossed his arms. 'If you were treated that poorly then you really must allow us to help you.'

"No, thank you," Rei said, taking a step toward the man. "We really need to get going."

"Yes, we really don't need any help right now. We just need to get going," Ace smiled as he picked up the basket of food so as not to further offend the gentleman.

"If there's ever anything we can do for you, though, let us know!" Ace said as he moved past them and outside the circle they had formed.

Rei followed Ace, surprised at how easily they left the circle. The surprise did not last long as the men stepped out of the trees in front of them to block of their departure.

"Oh, come on."

Ace looked behind him and then in front of them. He really wasn't sure what was going on but there the men were, standing in front of them. In their way. "So, hi again," Ace said unsure. "Um, is something wrong?"

"Let us leave," Rei demanded, holding up her left arm. She briefly wondered if these men were anything like the man that had tossed her last night, but pushed the thought from her mind. She just wanted to get out of here.

The men shook their head in unison. It gave Ace the heebie jeebies. "Sorry, we can't do that. We need to know more about the man that attacked you from last night. We have a feeling... let's just say he's an important person to us. Can you tell us more about your encounter?" the leader of the group asked.

"He showed up, threw me, and we ran. Thank you very much, but we must be leaving now." Rei pushed forward, prepared to shove her way out if she had to, but found that she had no choice but to remain. The men grabbed her arms and held her in place.

Ace was getting a flashback to last night. "Please, we really told you guys all we know. He was in a town in that direction," Ace said pointing behind them.

"We're just two normal Amestirisians. We've never hurt anyone, except for a long list of hearts I've broken. And, you know, how she hurts me all the time. We just want to be left alone," Ace pleaded.

The men shoved Rei back toward Ace and shook their heads simultaneously again. Rei shivered and suddenly felt the desire to curl up in a ball and cry; she nearly did when pain flared in her side. She gasped at the sudden return of her pain, shocked at how horrendous it was; it was much more painful than it had been previously.

Ace watched Rei fall into pain and took out the gun he'd been saving in his pocket. He fired it off and killed all the men. He always had an extra gun. What he didn't expect was the pain in his gut. He looked back and saw that Rei had stabbed him through the chest. "I...Can't believe it!"

Ace then died.
